TV Show Cloud Production (Part 1)

VegiPlus.tv Fan Engagement

By: Tim Bell

The production requirements for our VegiPlus.TV MTV like cooking TV show motivated us to transition to cloud video production. The expected challenges such as changes to existing production processes, editor training, and content security turned out to be much simpler than expected. However, moving to cloud production had some hidden challenges such as file naming/organization, distributed project production, and rights management, not to mention pricing can be a jungle of decisions.

The main reasons we decided to use cloud video production was to process the ingestion of clips in many formats, episode production which combines original host content with independent and fan content submissions, and the localization of episodes by local teams. To maximize our goal of using talent/content from all of the globe, the production had to move to a cloud based solution.

Cooking Video Acquisition

VegiPlus.tv gets 70%+ of our videos from independent owners we find from other video platforms. Once we have licensed the videos from owners, they are ingested into our VegiPlus.tv (VPT) system, processed (adjusted, trimmed, branded), reformatted for multiple channels (speed clips, social TV, etc), and published (scheduled and VOD).

VegiPlus.tv ingest clips worldwide which need to be transcoded/transrated into a standard editing format. VegiPlus.tv uses tens of independent contractors worldwide who use cloud video systems (WeVideo, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc) to ingest, trim, and brand video clips.

Episode and Clip Production

VegiPlus.tv episodes (24 minutes) involves the identification and gathering of clips, production and addition of host commentary, and insertion of fan social media content. Episodes are produced for streaming channels (Roki, Amazon Video, NetFlix, etc), for web portal (shortened clips), and for local TV broadcast.

Show producers select clips that match episode themes, work with host to create semi-scripted commentary, and a social tv producer reviews and works with fans for contributed content insertions. We do co-create some full scripts for sponsor messages and show instructions. Fan social contributions (videos, photos, and text) are ingested, identified, described, and tagged so they can be selected, processed, and then inserted into show episodes published on the VegiPlus.TV website.

Show City Localization

VegiPlus.TV episodes can be localized by replacing hosts and social media comments when distributed in different cities. To localize content, VegiPlus.tv uses local independent contractors who use cloud video editing systems in their cities to insert new host introduction video clips into episodes, replace fan social media contributions, and create and publish localized content social media posts. VegiPlus.tv also gets local sponsors which requires the local teams to ingest and adapt the content, and insert it into local episodes.
